William Hansen — Churchie Water Polo Star, 16, Remembered as Tributes Pour In

BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA — The Australian sporting community is in mourning following the sudden and heartbreaking death of William Hansen, a gifted 16-year-old water polo player whose life and promise have been cut tragically short.

Hansen, a standout athlete at Anglican Church Grammar School, widely known as “Churchie,” died last week, leaving teammates, classmates, and family devastated by the loss of a young life filled with potential and promise.

Recognized as both a Queensland and Australian junior representative, Hansen had already begun to establish himself as one of the sport’s brightest emerging talents. Known for his speed and scoring ability as a wing driver, he had recently been honored posthumously as the best-and-fairest under-17 male player by the University of Queensland Water Polo Club—a testament to both his skill and sportsmanship.

But beyond his achievements in the pool, those closest to him remember a young man defined by loyalty, kindness, and an infectious sense of humor. Coaches and teammates described Hansen as “joyful” and “a loyal mate,” someone who lifted the spirits of everyone around him and remained deeply committed to his team, even in difficult moments.

In one widely shared tribute, it was recalled how Hansen, despite being injured, traveled to Perth simply to support his teammates at a national championship—carrying water bottles and cheering them on from the sidelines.

In the days following his passing, emotional tributes have flowed across the water polo community. His No. 7 cap was retired in his honor during a commemorative match, with teammates dedicating their games and upcoming national championship campaign to his memory.

Hansen is remembered as a devoted son to his parents, Alicia and Alex, a loving brother, and a cherished friend whose presence brought light to those around him. Community-led fundraising efforts have also emerged to support his family during this unimaginable time of grief.

A funeral service is set to be held at Churchie’s Morris Hall, where family, friends, and the wider community will gather to honor and celebrate the life of a young athlete gone far too soon.

As tributes continue, William Hansen is being remembered not only for his accomplishments in sport, but for the joy, loyalty, and kindness he brought into the lives of others—a legacy that will endure long beyond his years.
